MAHONING TOWNSHIP -- Hospitals implemented their emergency plans Wednesday after a Greyhound bus slammed into a tractor-trailer, killing one person and injuring dozens.
About a dozen people are still being treated at Geisinger Medical Center near Danville. Hospital officials say two of those people are still in critical condition, including the bus driver.
A Greyhound bus pulled into Geisinger Medical Center Wednesday afternoon. The bus was picking up bus passengers who were treated and released from the hospital and taking them to Ohio, which was their original destination.
Greyhound says 49 people were taken to five area hospitals. Officials at Geisinger call this a "mass casualty event."
Geisinger's Director of Security and Emergency Management Services says the medical center has between four and six drills each year to prepare for situations like this. The "hospital instant command system" was put into effect which means people were assigned different tasks related to the emergency. Around 2 a.m., Geisinger Medical Center called in extra staff.
Scott Bitting, Director of Security and EMS Services, believes all five of the hospitals that took patients today handled the situation well.
"We had bed capacity and we had people available and everyone came and responded and served in their disaster roles," Bitting said.
