WILKES-BARRE — Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday for a woman accused of trying to poison her son’s girlfriend in Luzerne County.

Officers claim Helen Galli, 81, poisoned Dawn Simyan with anti-freeze in 2011 after her son came into a large sum of money.

Simyan suffered kidney failure and other problems but survived.

This isn’t the first time Helen Galli has been in trouble with the law.

She pleaded guilty to arson charges in the early 90’s.

Opening statements are set to begin Tuesday at the Luzerne County Courthouse.

Im honestly not surprised that his mother pulled something like that. I know dawn and worked with her when Victor and her started seeing each other. Dawn that I know is a hard working, fun and loving woman. She and I would have our talks and she always said that there was something not right with his mother. Even when they started dating his mother was a not very nice woman towards her. Your a strong woman Dawn…keep your head up.
