WILKES-BARRE -- It may seem silly, but a special fundraiser in Luzerne County Friday night shed some light on a serious message: breast cancer awareness.

They came in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Dozens and dozens of bras were strung together and then stretched across the Market Street Bridge connecting Wilkes-Barre and Kingston.

Each bra meant a five dollar donation to the American Cancer Society.

The event is an annual one meant to raise money and awareness of breast cancer.

James Novis’ mother lost her battle with breast cancer last year.

"It was one of the toughest things that I ever had to go through and watch her go through so for me the cause is very special to me," said Novis.

Several nursing students came, bringing their bras.

They said they want to spread the message for everyone to check themselves for breast cancer.

"My mom was actually diagnosed with breast cancer and she is 21 years clean this year and it’sreallyimportyant for me to get the message out and to remind girls my age to do self-examinations every month, it’s very important. Just get used to your own body, get used to your own lumps so you get used to what’s normal and what’s not," said Kali Humphrey of Wilkes-Barre.

“Take care of your body, and just make sure exactly you know what’s supposed to be there, and what’s not supposed to be there," said Maylise Nieves of Hazleton.

Barb Moeller works at the Greater Pittston YMCA, running a free program for low income cancer patients.

She brought her specially decorated bra to the event.

"I brought my bra into work today and showed my co-worker who happens to be a male, and I go, ‘Hey matt! You want to see my bra?’ and he kind of gave me a look and I said ‘Why don’t you come down and watch us string all our bras?’ and he just laughed,” said Moeller.

Organizers and participants of the event said their goal is to make the fundraiser bigger and better each year, raising money for the American Cancer Society and increasing awareness.

October is breast cancer awareness month.
