DANVILLE -- School has been back in session at Dnaville Middle School for about a month.

School leaders, students and parents celebrated with a dedication ceremony Thursday night.

There was a bake sale, basket raffles, a social and a special dedication ceremony in honor of the school's re-opening.

The place was ravaged by flood waters in September of 2011.

Sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the middle school were forced to attend classes at other buildings for the last two years until a clean-up and renovation was complete at Danville Middle School.

"You know the school looks great, orange and purple everywhere, and it's almost like being in a brand new building, but we're actually back home which is a nicer feeling actually," said Principal Charles Smargiassi.

The school is now designed to handle flooding better, with special flood vents and plastic and cement materials.

The principal said most of the 12 to 15 million dollar renovation was paid for with federal funding.

"I have both of my kids back in the same building for once so that feels great for us as a family, and I know they're enjoying all being together again," said parent Jen Henney.

Students said they too are glad to be back, after two years in other buildings.

"We were kind of put in a cramped situation, and it's really nice that they re-did evereything beautifully and we're back in here," said eighth grader Kiera Fahey.

"I love it. It's a lot easier, it feels more like a middle school, and it's not as small and cramped and we're with the whole school now," agreed Emma Sharp, also an eighth grader.

Proceeds from the event Thursday night benefited Ryan's Run and Allied Services.
