SCRANTON -- Infect Scranton kicked off at the Mall at Steamtown Friday night.

It is three days of zombie-inspired events, including a challenge run at Montage Mountain and convention featuring stars of zombie shows, movies, and more.

The undead gathered to show off their gore Friday night, wearing costumes and make-up. They were also at the mall to kick off Infect Scranton.

"I feel like we're in a giant undead family," said Ashlee Heenan of Scranton.

The zombie fans also got a chance to meet some stars from the television show "The Walking Dead" and the movie "Dawn of the Dead," who said they were impressed with the turnout.

"I'm excited to be here, it's my first time in Scranton, and seeing all the people is very exciting," said Travis Charpentier of "The Walking Dead."

"I think it's great. I think it's great that they do this, you know? Walk around and everyone is into it and everyone is dressed up," said Colleen Owens of Moscow, whose daughter was having her face painted like a zombie.

Money raised from Infect Scranton events goes to local charities.

Last year almost 2,000 people took part in the three day event, and nearly $8,000 was raised for local charities.

At the Mall at Steamtown, people brought canned goods for the Scranton Rescue Mission.

"It's overwhelming, it really is," said event promoter Shannon Keith.

The goal was to set a world record at the Mall at Steamtown by having the most zombies in one place at one time.

The record is more than 8,000 and organizers said while they did not beat that, everyone had fun trying.
