DANVILLE -- People stopped in traffic on Route 11 in Danville now have something to look at while they wait: a colorful mural outside Royal Nails.

"It draws attention to mill street and that's where all the business is. I can't wait to see it finished," said Kristen Beaver.

Artist Jo Pennypacker designed the mural, which is Danville's second. It showcases Danville's iron heritage as well as modern attractions.

"It depicts the old mill and the lower part of the mural is the present day with the rails to trails theme of the bicyclists and recreation," said Pennypacker.

Pennypacker is putting the finishing touches on the mural at the corner of Route 11 and Mill Street. It took her about two months to paint.

What made this project so special for the people of Danville is some of them got to help with it themselves during some community paint days over the summer. People got to come out here, pick up some paint brushes and work on the mural.

"We had several community paint days throughout July so they all came out and worked on it," said Pennypacker.

The Danville Business Alliance commissioned the mural. Officials said it cost less than $5,000 to create.

"It's seen as another way to create reasons to make this a regional destination," said Jim Wilson.

Officials with the Danville Business Alliance said there are plans for several more murals in downtown Danville.
