WILKES-BARRE - A copy of a certified letter obtained by Newswatch 16 shows that the Sherman Hills Apartments complex was hit with dozens of code violations and a large fine.

According to the city, managers at Sherman Hills Apartments failed to have 60 apartments inspected when old tenants left, and new tenants moved in.

City apartment inspections are listed at $50 per unit.

The certified letter said that the apartments have since been inspected and new tenants have since been registered under city code, but the city has ordered the owners to pay $33,000 in fines and fees.

Several reports of violent crimes have been reported at the complex this summer, including a shooting that left two children in the hospital last month.

Managers at the apartment complex in Wilkes-Barre would not answer any questions about sanctions.

Owners of the complex in Brooklyn, New York did not return phone calls or emails from Newswatch 16.

Federal officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development said inspectors were at Sherman Hills earlier this week, and that a report on their findings should be released next month.
