WILKES-BARRE -- The managers of a troubled apartment complex in Luzerne County have announced new safety and security measures after the constant crime at the place.
Residents who live in Sherman Hills in Wilkes-Barre say they received a flyer on their doors within the last few days. We got these copies of the flyers from some residents. On them are bullet points of all the new visitor and parking regulations at the complex set to go into effect next month.
The Sherman Hills apartment complex in Wilkes-Barre doesn't have a lot of security right now, just a no trespassing and private property sign despite the recent rash of crime and shootings.
"It's just what's going on everyday here. I don't know what they're going to do to stop it."
Starting October 1, the new visitors and parking regulations from Sherman Hills property management will go into effect.
William Graham of Wilkes-Barre saw the flyer with the new rules when visiting his wife and son at the complex.
"I don't know why they don't just sit a police officer out here every day and just pay him to sit here and just watch," said Graham.
According to the flyer, there is an amendment to the Sherman Hills tenant lease. By September 27, tenants must register their cars with the office to get a parking permit. Visitors must register with a valid ID when coming to complex. They must also register their cars with the office and park in a visitor's lot.
If not registered, guests may be towed and tenants could face eviction.
But some residents here tell us they think the rules go too far, and that they're more of a hassle than a help.
One Sherman Hills resident who didn't want to be identified says the visitor's lot is too far of a walk for her elderly mother.
"They're telling us we have to park over here at the deli, and I have to come and get her with kind of a like a ticket and put it in her car."
Even with the new rules, William Graham says the fear of danger won't go away.
"My 4 month old, I fear for his life every day. I'm no angel myself, but it's hard. It's hard out here," said Graham.
The manager of Sherman Hills refused to speak with Newswatch 16.
The city of Wilkes-Barre says Sherman Hills is privately managed and it's at their discretion to develop and institute guidelines for the apartment complex and its residents.
