COAL TOWNSHIP -- Fire crews in Northumberland County tried in vain to save a fire chief's burning home Thursday.

It started around 6 p.m. Thursday in the home along West Independence Street near Shamokin.

Officials tell Newswatch 16 the chief of Coal Township rescue squad lives there with his family.

No one was hurt but a cat died in the fire.

A state police fire marshal will look to find what started the fire.
