LOCK HAVEN -- Watching the Lock Haven Regatta is a tradition for many people in Clinton County. The event is in its 43rd year, held along the west branch of the Susquehanna River.
"It's very enjoyable. It's relaxing too," Bob Roller said.
Every Labor Day weekend, boaters of all ages gather in Lock Haven from all over the world to show off their boat racing skills.
The event is organized each year by the Lock Haven Jaycees. In addition to the boat races, there is a street fair and organizers say this is the biggest fundraiser of the year.
"This is the one that pays all our bills and gives us money so we can fund everything," Keith Mincer said.
Keith Mincer is president of the Lock Haven Jaycees. He says the regatta helps fund events that are held by the organization all year.
"We have a great community. They like to help. They like the boat races. A very supportive community," Mincer said.
The Lock Haven Jaycees is not the only group to benefit from the regatta. Various fire departments also use the event as a fundraiser.
The Goodwill Hose Company is located about one mile outside of Lock Haven. The fire company serves meals to the boaters and spectators all weekend.
"We've been doing it for 3-4 years now. It's one of the main fundraisers for our fire company and it gets us involved with the boaters," Chief Eric Brungard said.
Chief Eric Brungard says the long hours are worth it. The fundraiser usually brings in between $4-5,000, plus the fire company gets a front row seat to all of the races!
