WILKES-BARRE -- A woman is dead after a three-alarm fire Thursday evening, according to the fire chief.

It happened at 6:45 p.m. at 77 Kent Lane in Wilkes-Barre.

Once crews were able to make it inside, the fire chief said they found an unresponsive elderly woman on the second floor and pulled her outside.

The coroner identified the victim as Elizabeth Kovach, age 91.

Newswatch 16 spoke to a neighbor who said he knows the victim.

“She was a wonderful lady. We loved her. My whole family loved her. The neighborhood loved her. She was nothing but a wonderful lady,” said Devin Reese.

Other neighbors described a chaotic scene.

“I just saw pouring smoke. There was people everywhere. All of this was already here, gigantic hose, gigantic fire, it was huge, it was ridiculous. The porch fell down, everything,” said Bailey Wright.

“Huge flames and smoke coming from that house down the street. We watched from the porch here. It was the worst thing I ever seen,” said Darryl Zimnaski.

Authorities ruled the fire accidental. They said it was caused by careless smoking materials.
