GILBERT -- The latest edition of the Farmers' Almanac has hit newsstands and, according to the 197-year-old publication, it's going to be a "bitterly cold" winter.

The almanac also predicts a messy snowstorm the day of the Super Bowl which is set to be played at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

But not everyone believes what the Farmers' Almanac is predicting.

At the West End Fair in Gilbert, people are enjoying the end of summer, dressed in short sleeve shirts and shorts.  No one is thinking about that four letter word yet: cold.

"I think we had a really warm summer, so it could be a bad winter but I'm hoping it stays warmer," said Jessie Johnson of Effort.

Some of the phrases the almanac uses to describe the winter ahead include "piercing cold," "bitterly cold," and "biting cold."

But not everyone believes what's in the Farmers' Almanac including Jessie Johnson of Effort.

"Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I don't foresee someone can tell."

Dawn Borger, who has an organic farm of her own, does put faith in the Farmers' Almanac. You can say it's because farming is in her blood.

"My grandfather was a farmer and he swore by the Farmers' Almanac. I would say myself, I do."

When it comes to knowing what the weather will be like to grow a successful garden of vegetables, some people may read the Farmers' Almanac but if you ask a farmer if they read the Farmers' Almanac, they'll tell you they have a bunch of other predictors they use.

"The way the caterpillars are looking, they're all black right now," said farmer Larry Altemose.
"So that's what you go by?" So you don't go by the Farmers' Almanac?" "Yeah, but the caterpillars verify it."

Altemose says the caterpillars have more black than orange fur which he says indicates that it's going to be a harsh winter. Altemose follows the Farmers' Almanac for planting his crops but says there are times the almanac doesn't hold true.

"Yeah, so do the weather forecasters."
"Like who in particular? A guy by the name of Joe Snedeker?"
"Yeah, yeah, Joe Snedeker."
