SCRANTON--Nursing students returning to Marywood University this semester have something to look forward to.

Newswatch 16 first reported in April that the university had been denied renewal of its nursing program, impacting more than 100 students.

School officials said an appeal was immediately filed, which meant it never lost its status.

Morgan Smith, a sophomore at the university said the weeks surrounding this news was a bit stressful.

"Being a freshman it wasn't really that big of a deal because they guaranteed we would be accredited by the time we graduate. Which was fine, but it's still you know weight on your shoulders when you don't know what to do and your program is going to be an accredited program or not," Smith said.

University officials learned on Thursday that the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission would renew its accreditation.

Incoming freshman Maureen Royce said she remained hopeful as she got ready to head to school. She said the uncertainty didn't stop her from attending school at Marywood.

"I definitely had a good feeling about the staff and that they were going to get their accreditation back. I was pretty confident and that didn't change my decision," Royce said.

School officials would not comment on whether or not students left the university during the appeal process.

Officials also did no comment on pending lawsuits from 10 former nursing students.

Sister Anne Munley said the university is moving forward and getting ready for the new semester.

"We are very much caught up in providing the best quality education we can here at Marywood. That's actually what we've always done and that's what we will continue to do," she said.

Officials say the accreditation is good for another year.
