SCRANTON---President Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden are expected to speak at Lackawanna College in Scranton Friday on the topic of affordable college education.
According to White House officials said President Obama will soon be rolling out new higher education policy proposals, aimed at giving middle class families more opportunities to afford college.
"I think it's great that he's coming out here and he's trying to help middle class citizens go to college and get their degrees and it's hard for regular people out here to make a living," said Shannon Bernek of Avoca.
Scranton is the last stop on President Obama's tour of schools. He will start Thursday in Buffalo, New York at the University of Buffalo then head to Syracuse where he will speak at a local high school. Friday, he will speak in Binghamton at Binghmaton University followed by his final stop in the Electric City and Lackawanna College.
Many are excited by the visit and the President's message, but others said there are more important topics in this country and they wonder why the President is spending his time on this one, especially in Scranton.
"Why don't we do something to make this country some money instead of worrying about this? I mean, to be honest with you, this country needs to make money," said David Donovan of Gouldsboro.
"Some people can afford it, some can't but people with low pay, it would help them out you know? It changes it up for them," said Kenny DeRosa of Tobyhanna.
But Scranton resident George Hogan said he understands why the President has chosen the four cities for his talks, ending with Scranton.
"Well you have Joe Biden, citizen, former resident. Scranton is a blue collar city so it's emblematic of Pennsylvania and the working class community pretty much for the whole nation in a sense," said Hogan.
The President and Vice-President are scheduled to speak starting at 4:55 p.m. Friday.
