PALMYRA TOWNSHIP -- A crash involving a pedestrian has a left a woman from Pike County in what's described as very critical condition. She was hit over the weekend.

Diane Bernstel, 56, the events coordinator at Earhardt's Waterfront Resort on Lake Wallenpaupack was hurt when a driver hit her as she crossed busy Route 6 near Hawley.

"It just breaks my heart," said Jessycalyn Vagnini. "It's a shame."

State police say Bernstel was crossing Route 6 here at a crosswalk near some businesses late Sunday night.

Troopers say a driver - Nancy Piotrowski of Beach Lake - did not stop and hit Bernstel.

The crosswalk is used often, according to a worker at a salon nearby.

"For someone to walk across, they're like, 'OK, it's a crosswalk, people have to stop for me.'  It's not always the case. Even on Main Street, when people are doing 25 miles an hour, you have to pay attention. People aren't going to stop." Vagnini added.

State police say when you cross the street at the crosswalk, by law, drivers are supposed to yield or slow down but sometimes that's not always the case.

"When you have that sign up, the pedestrian crosswalk in the middle, that one, we expect the cars to stop for us, but here, they don't do it," said Jacob Balisalisa of Bradford County.

State police are still investigating but say they plan to cite the driver for not yielding to a pedestrian.
