CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP-- From bikers to boy scouts to members of local churches, people from the Poconos and beyond came to Kresge Funeral Home in Brodheadsville, Sunday afternoon to honor the life of David Fleetwood
The Ross Township Code Enforcement officer was one of three people who died after police say Rockne Newell opened fire during a municipal meeting Monday night.
Steve Rhoads, Scoutmaster of Troop 98 from Brodheadsville organized an honor guard of scouts for the funeral, in tribute to all of the help that Fleetwood gave to his troop and others across the area.
"He did what he loved, he helped people," he remembered. "We were moving stone and we needed a loader, he was the first one there with his loader to help out to make it easier on the scouts."
At the Pocono Raceway where he parked cars for 20 years, at local fire houses, and at local parks, Fleetwood's generosity was legendary across West End, showing the selflessness he exhibited Monday night when witnesses said he used his body to shield a woman from gunfire.
Tammy Maple and members of various local churches came to the visitation to pay tribute.
Maple says, "I declare him a hero. He was very brave to stand in front of that gun to take those bullets."
Inside the funeral, Fleetwood was eulogized by his best friend and by two of his fellow Chestnuthill Township Supervisors.
Fighting back tears they remembered a man who they say was both practical and had a great sense of humor.
Mourners at the service were encouraged to honor Fleetwood's heroism and help the community heal by going forward and doing good deeds.
Maple says, "We have been praying, it could have been any of us. It could have been a town hall meeting in Stroudsburg, Brodheadsville, anybody in Monroe County, we could have been there."
