BOWMANSTOWN -- Newswatch 16 was at an event in Carbon County Thursday that gave people the Power to Save when it comes to recycling their old appliances.

Organizers of the electronic and white goods recycling project in Bowmanstown were impressed. For four hours there was a steady stream of people bringing in all kinds of items, things that take up a ton of space in the home, such as old TVs and computers.

"Oh, my gosh!  I have a brand new garage now. I have a motorcycle in my garage and now I can get to my motorcycle," said Bob Bunch of Palmerton.

The recycling program was sponsored by the Carbon County Builders Association. They say when recycling, people don't have to worry about private information which may be on their computer's hard drive.

"They clear the hard drives. They destroy the hard drives so any sensitive information is not used by an outside individual," Deb Kleckner explained.

The Carbon County commissioners eliminated the county's recycling program earlier this year, citing budget problems. Some predict that could spark other issues.

"You're probably going to find more stuff on the mountain, going up the mountain, because they did away with it. I think there were a lot of people recycling and now that the recycling is no longer in Carbon County, I think you're going to find a lot of stuff thrown along the highways," said Paul Kleintop of East Penn Township.

The next recycling event in Carbon County will be September 7 and 8 at the Towamensing Township municipal building.
