POINT TOWNSHIP -- A fire Monday afternoon destroyed a home in Northumberland County.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the home's garage and because of all the wind, the flames spread quickly.
It happened before 2 p.m. at the home on Dogwood Lane in Point Township.
All that is left of the large house near Northumberland is the foundation.
The homeowner tells Newswatch 16 he and his family were out back swimming in their pool when they saw smoke coming from the garage and called 911.
Firefighters got there minutes later and say the house was already up in flames.
No one was hurt.
Firefighters say there was a lack of water because the house is in a rural area and strong wind made fighting the fire difficult.
"Fire needs wind or oxygen to survive. When you're feeding a fire with wind it gives it all that more oxygen to survive and it makes it hotter and harder to control," said Lt. George Geise, Tuckahoe Volunteer Fire Company.
Firefighters say at this point they do not know what caused the fire but they do not believe it was suspicious.
A state police fire marshal said there is too much damage to determine the cause of the fire. It will remain listed as undetermined.
The homeowner says his family built the house in 2004 and lived there ever since. They are staying with family members in the area.
