LAURELTON–The 88th annual Union County West End Fair kicked off last night near Mifflinburg!  People spent today getting their animals ready for competition, and dropping off what they hope are prize-winning exhibits.

It was time for final preparations at the Union County West End Fairgrounds near Mifflinburg.  Animals got haircuts, baths and weighed in to get ready for the livestock competitions.

“You’ve gotta feed them twice a day, you’ve gotta clip them for the show, train them when you can,” Brad Sauers said.

Brad Sauers has shown animals for about eight years.  Last year his dairy cow, Andrea won an award.  Brad and his brother both hope to leave the Union County West End Fair as winners.

“I show a cow, he shows a heifer, we both have a steer and we both have a dairy beef,” Sauers said.

Something new this year at the Union County West End Fair is the show arena.  It was recently expanded so more people could watch the livestock competitions.

“It’s doubled to tripled in size. So there’s much more room for them to do that kind of stuff,” Judy Moyer said.

The Union County West End Fair is in its 88th year.  Lulu Hoffman has entered items in the exhibition competition for most of those 88 years.

“Well I usually enter vegetables, fruit and flowers,” Lulu Hoffman said.

Lulu and many other people hope to win best of show.

“It’s competition.  I like to see what I can do and I like to see what other people can do,” Hoffman said.

“You can enter anything from vegetables to flowers, baked goods, arts and crafts a vast variety of stuff,” Moyer said.

The Union County West End Fair features dozens of food vendors and rides.  The fair runs through Saturday near Mifflinburg.
