MUNCY -- After nearly 40 years on the job a police chief in Lycoming County has retired.

Chief Dick Sutton's last day on the Muncy police force was Wednesday.

Chief Sutton has decided to retire at the age of 62. He started on the force in the late 1970s as a patrolman and by the late 1980s was chief.

"I grew up in town, I have the advantage of a lot of people knowing me and I know a lot of people," said Chief Sutton.

In the nearly 40 years wearing a badge, protecting the public in the historic borough, Chief Sutton has seen it all; emergencies and criminal investigations and everything in between.

"I've seen good people, bad people, and some who shouldn't even be walking the face of the earth. But fortunately the good outweighs the bad," added Chief Sutton.

Muncy, meanwhile, has started looking for a new chief of police. With Chief Sutton gone, borough manager Bill Ramsey said it will take some getting used to.

"He's established a very good rapport with all the citizens, particularly with all the students in the school district, he'll be missed," said Ramsey.

Chief Dick Sutton has been the face of Muncy police for the better part of three decades and even though he's retiring, he said he doesn't want to leave law enforcement. He'd like to something similar to it. He says once it gets in your blood, you can't get it out.

"The old statement is you can take the man out of the uniform, but you can't take the uniform out of the man," he said.

The chief said he'll take a few weeks before deciding what is next.
