HAZLETON -- It was supposed to be just another field trip to the pool.

A short ride down the interstate for a group of children from the YMCA camp in Hazleton.

But instead, a tractor trailer rear ended one of the two school buses full of kids along Interstate 81 south near Hazleton.

"Traffic came to a slow down due to some construction taking place in the schuylkill County area along the interstate," said Hazleton State Police Captain Edward Hoke.

The crash near the Mcadoo exit forced part of the interstate to close for periods of time.

47 people on the bus that was hit were taken to area hospitals. Many of them were children between the ages of six and ten.

28 of the youngsters on the bus were checked out at Hazleton General Hospital, and then sent home with their parents. 18 other children more extensive treatment at the hospital.

Flown officials say they suffered minor injuries, mostly bumps and bruises.

"The kids initially, when i got there, they were upset, shaking," said YMCA CEO Sue Farley. But when they came here, the hospital staff was so good with them, kind of distracted them, so the kids are doing pretty well."

A camp counselor was flown to Lehigh valley hospital near Allentown.

Officials with the YMCA say she is expected to be okay.

"She`s been with us quite a while, she`s an excellent counselor. All our counselors are very dedicated to these kids, get very involved with them," added Farley. "So we`re saying a quick prayer for her."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police believe the tractor trailer driver is doing okay.

No word yet on whether or not he will be charged.
