PITTSTON -- This week's heat wave forced a change of plans for a popular get together in Luzerne County. For the first time in at least 25 years, the Pittston Active Adult Center had to move its annual picnic indoors.

More than 80 seniors from the Pittston area headed to the Pittston Active Adult Center Friday morning. For most of them, hanging out there with friends is nothing new. But, what is new is having the annual picnic indoors.

"Rather than cancel and disappoint people, we decided to bring everything inside. Needless to say, they're thrilled," said center director Connie Andrews.

"It's nice and cool here. Too warm over there, too hot," said Natalina Despirito of Pittston.

The Pittston Active Adult Center usually has its annual picnic at a pavilion in Plains Township. But, organizers say, with the heat wave this week, they had to bring it indoors. And it's probably a good thing they did. We brought our thermometer out and it says it feels well over 100 degrees.

"I love it because it's too hot outside. They are good, everything is great," said Beryle Stover of Pittston.

Despite being inside, nothing really changed. A few hours of bingo followed by a buffet lunch and - a favorite at the center - dancing

Andrews says this is the first time she can remember that they have had to bring the picnic in doors but she admits, keeping everyone safe is more important than some fun in the sun.

"Heat stress can be a serious problem and we didn't want to run into any of that."

Even though the sweltering heat may be putting a damper on some people's plans, these seniors didn't let that bother them. They just kept dancing the day away.
