WEST PENN TOWNSHIP -- Three people were taken to the hospital Thursday after a truck brought down utility poles.

It happened along Route 309 near Tamaqua.

Police say a truck carrying concrete blocks caught some overhead lines, bringing down several utility poles.

One of the poles crashed through the windshield of a van and landed on top of the driver.

"His boom was up. Reports say it was up three to four feet. He actually caught the poles, caught the lines, like a domino effect and when he did hit the one pole, it snapped and went into the windshield of the vehicle striking the driver," said Sgt. Melissa Boyer, West Penn Township Police.

Both drivers and a passenger in the van were taken to the hospital. There is no word on their conditions.
