MOOSIC -- It was a hot night at PNC Field, and it had nothing to do with the weather.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders got another major league boost as New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez played with the team Thursday night. The third baseman said he’ll be playing here Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well.
With a home run in the second inning, Alex Rodriguez proved his major league manpower at PNC Field. The New York Yankees third baseman is with the team as he continues rehabilitating his off season hip surgery.
“Oh, it’s very exciting. I can’t wait to see him back on the Yankees, but it is exciting to see him right here,” said Melissa Matriccino.
“It’s pretty awesome. I’m really excited to see someone from the Yankees play, it’s really exciting,” said Noah Matriccino.
Fans flocked to the field to see A-Rod, coming in from near and far.
“Oh great, it’s great to him and everybody cheered for him. I didn’t hear any boos, I felt like I was vintage at 15 years old, screaming a hero, I love Alex Rodriguez, wearing his jersey,” said Javier Hernandez from New Jersey.
“I was excited. I’m happy to see him back. I want to see him healthy, want to see get back on the Yankees because we need him right now,” said Galen Montalvo from Lords Valley.
A-Rod has not played with the Yankees this season, but has played with the team’s minor league franchises.
First with the Single "A" team in South Carolina, then with the Double "A" team in Trenton, now he’s taking his turn with the RailRiders, the Triple "A" franchise.
A-Rod said it was refreshing playing back in the minor leagues.
“To be around so many young talented kids, their energy, their enthusiasm is infectious,” said Rodriguez.
Still, he said there were some reality checks along the way.
“I'm beginning to feel really old. Every time I get to first base or something these guys tell me 'when I was in elementary school you were my favorite player.' Oh, man.”
