LARKSVILLE – Police said a vigilant mailman led to the discovery of three malnourished dogs abandoned inside a hot house on East Broadway Street on Thursday afternoon.

Officials with the Luzerne County SPCA told Newswatch 16 that the dogs clearly lacked nutrition and were infested with fleas, but they are expected to be okay.

Larksville Police Officer Mike Thomas said a mailman called for help after seeing a screen pushed out of a second floor window, and a dog trying to escape from the hot building.

According to Thomas, the owner of the dogs told police that he had no plans to come back for them.

"He stated that he is in Philadelphia. He got stuck there working. He said he hasn`t been back two, two and a half weeks. Right now it’s under investigation but charges will probably be filed for animal cruelty,” said Thomas. "Hopefully somebody will adopt them and take care of them like they should be taken care of."

Debbie Fuches said she brought the dogs treats after seeing police take them from the house.

“Those poor dogs are so thin. I figure they could use it,” said Fuches. "I have two dogs and I can’t see why someone would have animals and just let them go. It`s a shame."

Authorities condemned the building and said the dogs will likely be put up for adoption after the recover.
