WILKES-BARRE -- A business catering to dogs in Luzerne County was targeted by a burglar Sunday night.

Workers believe all of the barking may have scared off the crook.

Workers at Preppy pets say Sunday night was the first time they've had any problems in their five years of business.

Dozens of dogs spent the holiday weekend boarded at Preppy Pets on North Sherman Street in Wilkes-Barre while their owners were out of town for Independence Day. Monday morning, dog owners found the front door boarded up.

Wilkes-Barre police say one crook was able to steal cash when the doggie daycare and grooming business was locked up for the night.

"They're very fun to work with. I love working here. It's a shame to see something like that happen to a place like this," said Courtney Shanley, Preppy Pets manager.

Workers say they found a huge rock, broken glass all over the floor, with the security alarms blaring. About 50 dogs were boarded up for the night. They were riled up by all of the noise, but workers say the dogs are doing just fine.

Shanely says the only thing taken during the break in was a clear donation jar, with about $60 inside for the Dog Scouts of America. The business office, register, and a donation jar for the Luzerne County SPCA were left untouched.

"No other money was taken except for that jar. I think between the alarm system and the dogs, it probably scared whoever it was away."

Preppy Pets is accepting donations to replace money in that cash jar that was stolen.
