AVOCA – Police in Luzerne County said two thieves used a ladder to climb up to a second story window and break into a baseball field house.

Surveillance video released by investigators showed one of the two men using a stolen ladder to reach the window and break into the Avoca-Dupont Little League Complex early Saturday morning.

Investigators told Newswatch 16 that about $200 was stolen from the locked building.

Parents and relatives of little leaguers playing in an all-star game Tuesday evening told Newswatch 16 that they were disgusted about the crime that targeted young youth.

"It`s a shame. They try to fix that field up so they have the baseball field, they have the park,” said Alice Bentham. “Someone has to go in there, break in and take from the kids? I don`t think that`s right at all."

Last month, the Avoca-Dupont Little League won an online contest with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders.

The minor league baseball team’s grounds crew helped little leaguers groom their field and clean up litter.

Little League sponsors said the they hope that police are able to catch the crooks.

“It's been happening in different, other towns but it's not normal for Avoca area,” said Bill Renfer of Valley Meat and Deli. "Somebody's desperate for money. I feel sorry for them and I feel sorry for the little league. The little league does not deserve it, nor does anybody else in the area deserve that type of treatment."

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Avoca Police at 570-457-4011.
