Two people are locked up in Bradford County for allegedly keeping a 12-year-old girl in a makeshift cage in their home near Dushore.

It was inside a home on Route 220 near Dushore that state police say Mary and Richard Frankenfield kept a 12-year-old girl in a makeshift cage and also locked the girl in a closet in her bedroom for extended periods of time.

Police arrested the two and charged them with false imprisonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say starting in 2010, when the girl was 10 years old, the Frankenfields began keeping her in a cage they made by nailing a plywood board over a crib in their house in Albany Township.

Police say the couple told them they did it because the girl has cerebral palsy, a brain disorder that impairs movement, and they contained her to protect her from getting into things.

“I can`t really see any reason for it. I mean, maybe they thought so, but treat them like a dog or something,” said Ryan Phillips of Dushore.

Police say when the girl turned 11, the Frankenfields began locking her in a closet in her bedroom.

Investigators say the closet was about four feet wide and there was a crib mattress and toys in there as well.

Police would not say what type of relationship the Frankenfields had with the girl.

“It just seems kind of a crazy. You know I wouldn`t think you would ever treat a person like that but disability or not it just seems crazy, “said Phillip.

Mary and Richard Frankenfield are being held at the Bradford County Prison on $85,000 bail.
