TANNERSVILLE -- Some swimmers in the Poconos may soon be part of a Guinness World Record for learning how to swim.

Nearly 50 beginner swimmers took part in the "World's Largest Swimming Lesson" at Camelbeach Mountain Water Park in Tannersville.

Camelbeach is one of more than 700 participating locations worldwide.

The goal of the "World's Largest Swimming Lesson" is to prevent drowning.

"If they fall in, basically how to turn around, float up, versus putting them in a circumstance where they don't know what to do," said Katrina Ptakowski, a lifeguard at Camelbeach.

Ethan Grossman already knows how to swim, but this lesson still is very important to him.

"Over the winter and fall, you probably forget stuff," said Grossman.

Ethan's mom agrees and is glad he's learning how to be a stronger swimmer.

"I didn't know how to swim growing up and I didn't take lessons.  So now I want to make sure he's good to go," said Heather Siegel.

Cynthia Jackson of Allentown is also getting a refresher course in the swimming department with some of her family members.

"I never really learned. I tried it on my own. I love the backstroke. But now I sink," said Jackson.

Camelbeach officials will submit the sign-up sheet listing the people who came out to learn how to swim. Then, wait to see if their swimmers will be part of a Guinness World Record.
