WILKES-BARRE – Authorities in Luzerne County say they are investigating a second dog attack in the city this month.

Police say a brown and white pit bull running loose in the area of Hutson Street bit a 15-year-old boy in the hip area on Wednesday.

The woman who reported the incident to police Thursday morning said she rushed her son to the hospital.

An animal enforcement officer is working to locate the dog and its owner.

Earlier this month, an officer shot and killed another pit bull following a dog attack in the city.

According to investigators, the pit bull attacked a terrier-poodle mix, and then charged at officers.

At the SPCA of Luzerne County in Plains Township, shelter manager Cindy Starke told Newswatch 16 that most dog attacks are the result of poor ownership and training, not because of the dogs breed.

“Even a very trustworthy dog can be provoked by something that you or I cannot detect,” said Starke. “So, it`s always best and safest to have your dog on lead at all times."

An animal enforcement officer is still looking for the pit bull that bit the teenager.

Information about adoptions, donations and dog licensing is available at the SPCA of Luzerne County.
