A Scranton Department of Public Works employee is accused of shoplifting.

Scranton Police said a security officer saw Anthony Giannone slip dog food and deodrant into his pockets Friday afternoon, go to the register to buy the rest of his groceries, and then walk out without paying for what was in his pockets.

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty said he can't comment on the alleged incident yet, but he's looking into it. Giannone is the Vice President of the city's DPW union.

The mayor couldn't tell Newswatch 16 if he was supposed to be working Friday afternoon when police said they hancuffed Giannone at Redner's Market and took him to be processed.

Giannone is charged with a summary offense of theft. He was not at work Monday and neither was the DPW's director to tell Newswatch 16 what Giannone's status is now with the department.

If convicted, Giannone may have to pay a fine.
