SHAMOKIN -- Authorities in Northumberland County are investigating the death of a 2-month-old infant.

Shamokin police were at the infant's home Monday morning and stayed throughout much of the day.

Shamokin police say they were called to a home in the 300 hundred block of South Market Street for the report of an unresponsive child who was being taken to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.

The Northumberland County coroner says the infant, 2-month-old Navaydius Marciniak was pronounced dead at the hospital and police say investigation is now underway.

Neighbors say authorities were at the home throughout the day.

“I came home about 1 o'clock this afternoon and there was three cop cars, the coroner and two children and youth vehicles and they've been coming off and on all afternoon. It's really a sad situation,” said Trish Greager.

The coroner said the infant's father, Daman Marciniak, his mother, Turquoise Johnson, the infant's two older brothers and the infant were all sleeping in the same room when the death occurred.

People inside the home were taken to the police station for questioning however the police chief says it's too early to say if a crime was committed.

They are waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death to see if it is suspicious or accidental.

People in the neighborhood say either way it's a tragedy.

“It's a sad situation and it's a very quiet neighborhood and to have something of that catastrophe happen, it's kind of scary,” said Greager.

State police are also assisting with the investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
