SHAMOKIN -- Last Friday, hundreds of people shivered through a parade in Shamokin, wearing scarves, hats and winter jackets, bundled up against chilly rain and whipping wind.  The temperature was in the low 40s.

Memorial Day was the coldest on record in the Newswatch 16 Backyard for the last eight years with lows in the 30s in Moosic, Lackawanna County.

People in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania are coping with temperatures in the 90s now, the beginning of a forecasted heat wave.

Temperatures have swung more than 50 degrees in less than a week.

At That Shake Place in Jefferson Township, Lackawanna County, workers said all the changes have been confusing.

"We were one day wearing sweatshirts here and jeans and not much business was coming through because it was so cold, and today it's a scorcher, we're going to have a lot of business," said Jillian Rosencranz of Madison Township.

"I actually went camping and it was really cold and now it's really hot. It's overwhelming," said Cheyenne King of Lake Ariel.

According to data from the Stormtracker 16 Weather Center, this year there have been unusual temperature fluctuations.

Eight of the last 12 months, there has been recorded snowfall in the region.

The last time there was a recorded heat wave was 10 months ago, on July 16, 17 and 18 of 2012.

"It actually surprises me that we didn't have warmer weather earlier because it's June. Pretty much, it's cold," laughed Alyssa Butler of Jefferson Township.
