HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- Hundreds gathered Memorial Day morning in Luzerne County to remember loved ones who put their lives at risk for our country.
What better way to pay tribute to the fallen than to visit their graves.
Hundreds prayed for their loved ones at a Memorial Day mass St. Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township outside Wilkes-Barre, honoring the troops, remembering those who served.
Jean Murphy of Plymouth and her family visited the grave of her husband, Paul, who served overseas during World War II.
"I think it's important to honor all our veterans and the sacrifices they made for us to keep us free, and I think we should all do that. I think it's very important," said Jean Murphy, of Plymouth.
"These people, you know, we can't forget because, without them, we don't have our freedom."
Visitors say the American flags add something to the already emotional service.
"It's a beautiful cemetery and the flags are beautiful," said Murphy.
But, more important are the memories that this mass in the cemetery brings back, memories of loved ones now long gone.
Joe Dobish says he prays for his father, who fought in the Korean War, which he says is often forgotten.
"How bad they say it really was, and if just people would recognize that war more," said Joe Dobish of Wilkes-Barre.
"Just my dad. I miss him. It's been a long time, almost 20 years, so it's a long time," said Theresa Dombroski of Sugar Notch.
Making Memorial Day the perfect time for her and others to pay their respects to the fallen.
