Judd Viburnum – Viburnum Juddi
Early May brings VERY FRAGRANT white/pink flowers; BODACIOUS red fall color. Grows to 10’ but takes hand pruning well. A must have for every garden.
Fothergilla – Fothergilla gardenii
Unusual white bottle brush-like flowers arrive in early May; very unique. Tremendous fall color always (consider the usual 30 day fall color). Grows to 6’ but takes hand pruning well.
Pruning
Now that buds are coming out on the plants you can see which branches should be pruned out. So prune them out!
Tent Caterpillars
There does not seem to be many around lately due to a late may freeze 3 years ago. Don’t worry, they will be back. In late April to early May look for small cottony “tents” and pull out of the crotch of the branch with your hand and squash. DO NOT BURN THEM OUT OF THE TREE. This will do more damage to the tree than the caterpillars. If you have a large infestation spray with Seven insecticide or other sprays labeled for tent caterpillars.
Insecticidal Soap
Insecticidal Soap is a soapy solution that consists of salts and fatty acids. These soaps are specially formulated to control soft-bodied insects such as mites, aphids, and thrips. Insecticidal soaps can kill these insects with a contact spray by disintegrating the outer membrane (cuticle) and disrupting the inner organs that become susceptible to further damage. Direct contact to the targeted insect is vital to successful control. The soaps have minimal residual activity, so multiple applications may be necessary to have quality control of the desired insect population. Applicators must be aware of all label instructions before applying insecticidal soaps.
