SCOTT TOWNSHIP -- A police chief of in Lackawanna County was arrested Wednesday, accused of intimidating a witness in a child sex abuse case involving a former teacher at the Lakeland High School.

Scott Township police chief James Romano has been off the job since the state attorney general's office began investigating him several weeks ago.

On Wednesday, a police tactical team picked him up and arrested him at this home in Scott Township. He was arraigned and charged with witness intimidation.

It stems from a sexual abuse case involving a teacher at Lakeland high School.

Chief Romano is accused of starting a sexual relationship with 20-year-old woman who was a witness in the case. She claimed to be one of the women sexually abused by the teacher when she was a minor student at Lakeland High School. According to court paperwork, Romano started a sexual relationship with her after she came forward about the alleged abuse.

Romano was sent to the Lackawanna Prison with bail set at $150,000.

Lackawanna County detectives said that as a result of the charges against Romano, the woman's testimony will not be used in the case against the Lakeland High School teacher, Matthew Stevens.

Stevens still faces charges involving alleged sexual contact with another woman.
