WILKES-BARRE -- Hundreds of girl scouts gathered at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre Sunday to welcome two-time Olympian and current ESPN commentator, Jessica Mendoza.

Mendoza has won gold and silver medals for the Unites States softball team.

The day's event was held to kick off the girl scouts year long commitment to walk one million miles and their healthy promise initiative.

They held an Olympic-like opening ceremony for Mendoza, and listened to her speak.

"We couldn't think of anybody better to come in and talk to the girls about walking a million miles and always for the rest of their lives taking good care of themselves," said Jane Ransom of the Girl Scouts Heart of Pennsylvania

The day also included games, and activities for the Girl Scouts and their families in Wilkes-Barre.
