HARRISBURG — A lawmaker from western Pennsylvania proposed a bill on Wednesday that would abolish the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

The proposal by Republican Donna Oberlander would do away with the jobs of turnpike commissioners, and transfer oversight and maintenance of the turnpike to PennDOT.

“I believe that PennDOT is uniquely qualified and more than capable of handling the additional 545 miles of roadways and bridges,” said Rep. Oberlander.

The proposal comes just weeks after the attorney general filed charges against six people, including ex-state senator Bob Mellow and some former turnpike officials in an alleged pay-to-play scheme.
