HAZLE TOWNSHIP -- Experienced sportsmen and some first timers were out for the opening weekend of trout season in Luzerne County. People took advantage of the sunny weather to head outdoors.

Not a worry in the world for folks who lined the banks of Lake Irena in Hazle Township. Opening weekend of trout season in Luzerne County isn't just about reeling in fish. It's also about enjoying some quality time with friends and family.

"My father brought me to this very lake when I was six, and my six other brothers, and we would fish the other side loyally every first day for years," said Mark Hunsinger of McAdoo.

Like Mark, many of the fishermen and women have been enjoying the sport for decades.

"I've been fishing for about 50 years, a long time! Yes, ever since I have been about five years old," said Steve Yuhas of Hazleton.

For others, like Ethan Smith of Freeland, this is their first time out.

"It's been really good, and I am very excited!" said Smith.

"We brought my son out here for his first day of fishing. So far so good, he just wants to catch this one that keeps taking his worm," said Kathy Smith of Freeland.

At the lake just outside of Hazleton, trout season kicked off on April 13, but just down the road in Schuylkill County, they got a bit of a head start with trout season kicking off two weeks ago.
