SCRANTON -- A former candidate for the state House of Representatives has died from injuries he received in a crash.

According to the Lackawanna County coroner, Ray Nearhood, 61, died Wednesday morning in the hospital.

Nearhood was driving on the Casey Highway in Throop when his vehicle slammed head-on into a minivan in August of 2012.

State police said Nearhood veered into oncoming traffic to avoid a truck that ran out of gas.
