WEST PITTSTON – A district magistrate in Luzerne County decided that felony charges filed against a state trooper last year should be sent to trial.

State police at the Wyoming barracks filed eight charges against trooper Carrie Gula in December, including unlawful use of computers, criminal use of communication facilities and filing false reports.

According to court documents, Gula was working at the Fern Ridge barracks in Monroe County last August when she filed a report claiming that she was hit by her boyfriend at his apartment in Exeter.

Eric Thomas testified at the preliminary hearing that Gula made a key to his apartment without his permission, took his cell phone, locked herself in his bathroom then threw a glass bottle at him before she left, while wearing her state police uniform.

Investigators in Luzerne County said they have cell phone and internet records that show Gula reset and attempted to access Thomas’ cell phone account.

Troopers said they determined that Gula’s claims that she was hit by Thomas were unfounded.

Gula told Newswatch 16 that she will take the stand and testify in her own defense if the case goes to trial.

According to Gula’s defense attorney, the trooper remains on unpaid leave from her job at the Fern Ridge state police barracks near Blakeslee.
