LEWIS TOWNSHIP -- A couple in Union County watched their house go up in flames. Their home near Mifflinburg was destroyed in the late night fire.
It broke out around 11 p.m. Monday.
Newswatch 16 spoke to the husband and wife who are thankful they made it out safely.
Catherine and Miles Maxfield watched as a state police fire marshal sifted through what used to be their home near Mifflinburg. Catherine says she was about to take a shower before bed when she saw smoke.
"I must've heard a bang. I looked out my door and saw these roaring flames," she recalled.
"She called me and I came out. I saw the fire and thought it wasn't big and tried to put it out, but when I opened the door, smoke just poured out and I couldn't stand it," said Miles.
A state police fire marshal said there is too much damage to say exactly what caused the fire, but he believes the fire started on the side porch.
"It's something. I never had anything like this," said Miles.
The Maxfields lived in the house on Penns Creek Road, near Mifflinburg for 40 years. Family members say they are grateful their loved ones made it out safely. Miles has arthritis and his family worried he would not be able to walk out of the burning house.
"I just hoped they both had gotten out," said daughter-in-law Sherri Maxfield. "We got a call from Catherine telling my husband to come because their house was on fire."
"I'm just thankful that God let him get off the chair and that he could walk because sometimes he has a little trouble with his back. We both got out safe and that's the main thing," said Catherine.
The Maxfields are staying with family members and plan to rebuild the house.
