EAST STROUDSBURG -- A group of students at East Stroudsburg University will have their own graduation ceremony in May.

The students are part of a non-degree program for people with intellectual or other developmental disabilities.

The program was formed at East Stroudsburg University as a way to prepare the students for the working world while giving them a college experience.

This is the first group to go through the three-year program.

Some had argued that the students should be part of the university's commencement ceremony.

The founder of the program disagrees.

"By doing something individually, separately, it allows us to create a big to do, if you will, something we can actually all cheer about and really get behind," said Domenico Cavaiulo of the Department of Special Education.

The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 10 at East Stroudsburg University.
