RICE TOWNSHIP -- The former chief of a volunteer fire department in Luzerne County faces theft charges for allegedly stealing from the organization.

Donald Bly, 31, from Mountain Top surrendered to police Wednesday morning.

Bly is charged with stealing more than $4,000 from the Rice Township Fire Department between June and December of 2012.

He formerly served as the department's treasurer and chief.

According to the current chief, the money Bly stole was meant to purchase a lawn mower and chainsaws for the department.

Court papers indicate Bly wrote the checks to himself.
