JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP -- The flags outside the Jefferson Township Municipal building are at half-staff out of respect for their former part-time Police Officer Eric Williams.

Over at the Jefferson Township Volunteer Ambulance Department, the flags are also at half-staff. Captain Gerald Dennis remembers the 34-year old Corrections Officer as a good Policeman here and an even better friend.

"Eric was a great guy, Eric was just like most of our police officers here, easy-going, great, and they do a very good job," said Dennis.

The coroner said Corrections Officer Eric Williams died from multiple stab wounds and blunt head and neck trauma after being attacked by an inmate inside the Federal Prison near Waymart.

Dennis said it was a job Eric took to advance his career after working in Lackawanna County for about three years.

"It was kind of sad to see him go, but you want him to be successful and happy at what he does," said Dennis.

In Jefferson Township, the Volunteer Ambulance Crews, fire and police work closely with one another and Williams used to stop here often while on duty. Dennis believes saying goodbye, will be a challenge.

"It`s hard, it`s very hard, the job we have to do."

Dennis considered Williams to be a brother, but in these tough times he wants to send his sympathy to others.

"My condolences to Eric's family, my condolences to his brothers and police officers that lost him, because I know they're hurting, I know they're hurting," said Dennis.
