MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP -- A Tuesday morning fire damaged a business and closed a road in Northumberland County.

The fire started at George Tomol Auto Sales on Front Street in Mount Carmel Township around 5:00 a.m.

PennDOT closed Route 61 around the area of the fire to allow crews to extinguish the flames and clean the scene.  It reopened at 8:20 a.m.

Officials say the fire started in the rear, first floor garage, but the cause is undetermined at this time due to so much damage.

A Mercedes inside was destroyed by the flames.  Several materials inside the garage also burned.

"There was a lot of fuel, a lot of tires. It's an automotive garage, oils, gases, multiple flammable liquids, so the firefighters did an excellent job getting this under control quickly,” said Mount Carmel Police Chief Brian Hollenbush.

Fire officials tell Newswatch 16 one firefighter received a minor injury.

The owner has partial insurance.

There is no word on when or if the business will be able to reopen.
