The pain of a tragedy hundreds of miles away in Indianapolis is being felt in Lackawanna County.

A devastating weekend crash involving an ambulance killed two paramedics, one who was a native of Scranton.

Indianapolis Police said it was around 3:30 A.M. Saturday when a city ambulance was making its way through downtown and was hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Nearly 700 miles away in Scranton, Jeff Medley learned that his son, Cody, a paramedic, had been critically injured. The family rushed to Indiana and spoke to reporters after Cody passed away on Sunday.

"I could not be prouder this boy, this man right here.  He's an incredible person. I wish you all could have gotten to know him," Jeff Medley said at a news conference.

The crash that killed 22-year-old Cody Medley from Scranton and his co-worker Tim McCormick is still under investigation. But, Indianapolis authorities know the wreck happened as Medley and McCormick were on their way back from an emergency call.

The crash hits close to home in more ways than one for paramedics in Medley's hometown. Lackawanna Ambulance Director Mike McCormick didn't know Medley but said what happened to him effects anyone who makes saving lives a profession.

"It's an unfortunate situation, yet it reminds you how dangerous this job can be," McCormick said.

McCormick and some of his employees saw news coverage of the crash in Indianapolis on TV and that led to a discussion about driver safety.

McCormick said he'll use the crash as an example for his EMT's and paramedics.

"We're in the same boat, as public servants, that you never let your guard down, and again just to look out for that other person," he added.

The driver who caused the wreck in Indianapolis could face criminal charges.

Cody Medley will be laid to rest back home in Scranton.
