POCONO TOWNSHIP – A challenge for people who wanted to get away for the long Presidents Day Weekend was the rising price for gasoline.

AAA said the price is up $0.15 from just last week.

For some who ended up enjoying the Poconos on Presidents Day Weekend, their plans had to change

Every year Heather Echevarria, her family, and friends from long island, go to the Poconos to spend the holiday.

"We decided to go up and do some skiing and tubing," said Echevarria.

"Just came to get away for the weekend, take the kids skiing and tubing," said Chrissy Leigh Manuell of New York

Newswatch 16 also caught up with other families at a busy Sunoco gas station outside Tannersville..

Some people were in too much of a hurry to get home to talk to us.

Those who did, explained while their vacation was needed, the pain of going back home starts at the pump.

"The gas prices deter you from enjoying your vacation," said Alita Miranda of New York.

According to AAA the national average price for gas jumped about $0.15 cents in a week.

For some people, the price at the pump was definitely impacting the way they traveled."

"They do definitely shorten the plans,” said Echevarria.

Echevarria also said the price at the pump hits home when she fills up her SUV, and when her family wants to hit the slopes.

Plans were also altered for a couple who stayed a few days at split rock resort. They say because of the high gas prices, this would be their only winter vacation.

"It's making the trip more memorable because of the gas prices. Because you get to do it one time as opposed to the many times you're used to coming up here,” said Miranda.

According to AAA, the national average price of regular unleaded gas was about $3.73 a gallon on Presidents Day.
