BLOOMSBURG -- Just about everywhere you look these days you'll see sights of heart shaped boxes and symbols of Valentine`s Day. Karen's Candy Barrel in Bloomsburg is a chocoholic`s dream.
Jay Nixon is spending money for his special valentine.
"A Valentine spread for my daughter who's a sophomore at a university over by Erie, so I'm going to fill up a box of candy, I have a list of all the the kind of things she likes." Nixon explained.
Candy shop owner Karen Williams said she has seen the effects of the economy.
"We do see people cutting back on on their chocolates although they will come in and buy a little less"
Karen Williams said her best sellers may surprise you.
"We also do a lot of chocolate dipped strawberries here and our gourmet chocolate dipped apples."
If candy is not your style, maybe flowers from Shickshinny Floral will do the trick. Owner Theda Belles said the work load for Valentine's Day, unlike Christmas and other holidays, is more in a given amount of time.
"Everybody wants them delivered on the day Valentine's Day, so it gets a little bit stressful."
Flower designer, Dianne Geurin said the price they pay for roses seems to peak every Valentine's Day.
"The price of them on Valentine's Day goes up for us, that`s why our prices are higher on Valentine's Day for roses than other times of the year."
It's estimated that Americans will spend $17 billion on Valentines Day. That includes everything from romantic dinners, to flowers, to candy and even lingerie. Valentines Day is big business.
