WILKES-BARRE -- Things are more solemn and less sparkly inside Bartikowsky Jewelers on South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.
After 125 years and four generations, the well-known jewelry store is getting ready to close its doors for good.
"I saw so many of these customers already grow up and they went on with more jewelry and that was a great era," said Max Bartikowsky, who owns the jewelry store.
Bartikowsky's closes for good Saturday at 5 p.m. John Powell stopped by to help his son pick out an engagement ring and to say goodbye to the store.
"The revitalization of downtown Wilkes-Barre over the last decade or so has been an amazing story and a journey within itself and it's a shame that Bartikowsky's won't be here to continue that down the road for generations to come," said Powell, of Kingston.
Owner Max Baritkowsky says no one in the family wanted to take over the business. Just a few blocks away on West Market Street, the end for another Wilkes-Barre landmark. Citizens Bank closed its downtown branch. Officials blame online and mobile banking.
This green sign will stay up for another day, but bank officials still haven't said what they'll be doing with the big green sign at the top of the building, and that's what has some people talking around town.
"Everybody I talk to, when they talk about citizens bank closing, they say the same thing. What about the sign?"
"What's going to happen with our sign? That was like a way to identify Wilkes-Barre," said Powell.
Employees from this Citizens Bank branch are moving to the branch in Kingston. The other Wilkes-Barre branches will remain open. With the closure of the bank and Bartikowsky's, some people feel the Diamond City will lack a little luster.
